Plus you should start with a baseline hot psi and go from there. The manufacturer recommends 28 cold. Running a session and checking your temps will give you a baseline hot psi to work from.
Who the hell are you anyway? I haven't seen many contributory posts of yours recently. Do a little research before you decide to call someone out. Rocalotadouche.

My math guy is going to the Code school in April. Just for fun he sent the query to the school. The head mechanic at the school wrote back that they adjust their tire pressure 1 psi per 10 degrees as the day heats up, just like my friend calculated. Turns out math IS your friend!

You PEOPLE all sound like PRIUS owners. Would it be funny if there was a Prius Forum out there talking about this same topic?
...wait for it...wait for it...I want to go fast on my Prius so I need to adjust my tire pressure forum.com |

If it was as simple as math, well then I guess everyone would be running the exact same temps for the same tires no matter what.
This thread is getting old. |

IMO, I do not like to rely too much on the 1 PSI/10° F relationship or relying on one cold tire pressure readout per day. That I’m sure works well as a starting point with no stresses been applied on the tire but depending on the rider’s ridding style tire pressures may defer from other riders, cēterīs pāribus. Hey, if it works for the military and comercial aircraft it should work for us, right?

Heck! Now that I think about it, how come it was possible to calculate the exact trajectory and amount of fuel needed for Neil to ride and park the Eagle and we cannot agree with a 1-5 PSI differential?! ![]() Anyway, I will keep checking my tires every now and then. It ain’t take to lang, ya’know. :neeb: |

That's a good question. I'm still puzzling over that one. I think maybe it doesn't matter for the novice and intermediate guy, because he's not approaching any limits. In any event, it's someplace to start.

I really appreciate your inputs to my threads. Your riding advice has been invaluable. I don't know why you're not digging this thread. You think it's better to check the pressures hot. I get it. Unfortunately, in this case, the manufacturer gives cold pressures. With that in mind, what pressure do I check for hot? How do I know if that number is right? |

But ultimately the goal is to become better, safer and faster. That being the case, accuracy and consistency is more important than ANYTHING! Whether it's tire pressures, suspension settings, or braking markers. You must be consistent both your testing and applications of these methods. You can't use one method because your a novice, then once you get bumped you change your methods now... Quote:

Jim, here's the deal and if I was running the Michelins this is what I would do, if they give you a cold temp, usually means they expect a 5psi increase, so hot you should be running my guess would be 33-35psi frt and 27-28psi rear. There is more discussion on this then you would imagine here - WERA BBS Linky.... Don't think you find any of the racers discussing mathematical equations..... |

Or, it could mean: you're the righteous man, and I'm the Shepard, and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that, but that sh** ain't the truth. The truth is: you're the weak, and I am the tyranny of evil men. But, I'm tryin', Ringo, I'm trying real hard to be the Shepard. |

Jim, just swapped emails with a good buddy of mine who used to race AMA and now is just club racing out of Phoenix, AZ, he's running Michelin's right now but since they haven't paid any of their contingency money since late last year, he'll probably be going back to Dunlop's.
This is what he had to say..... "I run DOT A in the rear until it gets hot like over 85 degrees then a B, run 1246 slick front then for the supersport races a V front. We have been playing with temps and seem to finding out that Michelin gives you cold temp and that seems to work. I think it is because the sidewall is so freaking stiff. We have been setting cold pressurs and are playing with the hot temps. Found out we have to check the tire temp to make any adjustments on the hot pressure Anyway, we run 29 cold and 33 hot in the 1246 1 lb higher in the DOT depending on conditions we run 20-22 cold in the DOT rears" If you want to continue running Michelin's, you may want to get a pyrometer to measure your tire temps. ![]() |
